This document specifies performance requirements and construction principles for primary wastewater treatment. Primary wastewater treatment is defined as removal of solids from raw wastewater, other than screenings and grit, which fall under the scope of preliminary wastewater treatment.
During primary treatment solids can be removed from raw wastewater employing various physical methods. Most common are sedimentation and very fine screening. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is not covered in detail in this document because it is not commonly used for primary treatment in municipal wastewater treatment plants. It may be used for primary treatment of industrial wastewater, but then the design is specific to the application. It may also be used for thickening of waste activated sludge which is not within the scope of this document.
This document also covers primary treatment with micro-screens which have become an alternative to primary clarifiers.
The primary application of this document is for wastewater treatment plants designed for the treatment of domestic or municipal wastewater.
