This European Standard deals with the determination of Fluorine in paper or board, and in the raw materials and process additives thereof. A general method for Fluorine determination is described for solid or liquid samples by hyphenated Combustion Ion-Exchange Chromatography (CIC).
For samples free of Fluorine, a range of 0.01 to 0.5 mg/l (ca. 0.5 to 30 mg/kg) shall be used. For samples containing Fluorinated compounds, a range of 0.5 to 20 mg/l (ca. 30 to 1200 mg/kg) shall be considered and sample weight adjusted as needed prior to combustion.
Guidelines for the determination/estimation of Total Fluorine, Inorganic Fluorine and Organic Fluorine are given, taking into account known issues with Total Fluorine determination.
