This standard specifies a framework for the analysis of indirect effects and minimisation of negative (or maximisation of positive indirect, whatever more relevant) indirect effects related to the production of biomass for energy applications. The framework consists of
1) problem definition,
2) assessment and monitoring methodology,
3) risk mitigation options, and
4) roles for bio-energy producers and regulators.
Potential drivers of indirect effects to be incorporated in this standard include competition with food, feed and industrial uses, competition with natural resources to produce biomass, taking into account the use of co-products as well. Potential consequences of indirect effects to be analysed and reported, include the impacts on GHG emissions, biodiversity, environmental aspects, and economic and social issues.
