This document includes safety requirements for serially manufactured projection screens according to DIN 19045 2 that are manually operated or motor-driven.
These are characterised by an optical projection onto a screen fabric from the same side of the screen as the audience or from the other side facing away from the audience (back projection system). Projection screens with built-in electronic systems, such as LED screens, or screens where the projection is not onto a single-sheet fabric (e.g. inflatable screens, installations consisting of one or more solid bodies) are not covered by this document.
The projection screens are intended for indoor professional use in event and production venues (theatres, cinemas, congress halls, but also museums and churches, etc.). For outdoor use, the relevant conditions (e.g. wind loads) shall additionally be taken into account during design, construction and installation.
The installations described in this document are distinguished from machinery installations according to EN 17206 in so far as they are not intended to carry any working loads in addition to the screen and any weight profiles. Moreover, safety requirements are also specified for some types of projection screens that are not considered machinery installations according to the EC machinery directive.
The purpose of this document is to ensure a constant safety level for the design, construction, installation, maintenance and inspection of machinery installations for use in event and production venues for theatrical productions, taking into account the special modes of operation. Therefore, this document also contains verifiable criteria for tendering procedures and for the inspection of serially manufactured projection screens.
