This Standard specifies an engineering method for measuring reflected walking sound from a floating hard floor covering system. The hard floor covering can be a laminate floor covering according, but not limited to EN 13329+A1, EN 14978 and EN 15468 and some kind of elastic underlay, installed floating on a concrete subfloor. The property of those constructions is that sound emission takes place within a small area around the point of impact. This Standard does not apply to floor coverings attached rigidly or glued to the concrete subfloor, where sound emission is dominated by the characteristics of the concrete subfloor. A sample of the test floor with dimensions of 2.0 times 2.4 metres is mounted on a flat concrete floor in a semi-anechoic room. Extra weights ensure a good contact with the floor. The test procedure imitates the real walking process with hard heeled shoes, where the walker and the shoe are replaced by an impulse hammer, having equal properties than a hard heeled reference shoe. The result obtained can be used to express the loudness of the reflected walking sound and to compare walking sound properties of various hard flooring systems. The subjective rating of various floorings has been assessed with the jury panel method using various floor setups and it is in close agreement with measurements according to this standard.
