This document establishes guidelines for the validation and use of simulation models for exterior noise emission of all types of railbound vehicles. It provides validation criteria for the simulations to be used and its associated inputs. It proposes noise sources characterization details either measured or simulated.
1. Objective:
o The aim is to propose a process to validate acoustic simulations as an alternative to physical tests;
o To define methodologies and requirements for the virtual validation of exterior noise generated by railway rolling stock.
2. Applicability:
o This document will apply specifically to the exterior noise emissions of all types of railbound vehicles including passenger and freight trains.
3. Methodology:
o To define a process for virtual validation including validation of simulation tools and validation of the application of tools including input data;
o To define an acceptable validation criteria:
for tools by comparing with a set of references cases;
for the application of tools to simulate rolling stock with a set of well characterized measurements;
o To specify the input data and results from the simulation. The document outlines the required level of detail for input data and results in relation to the expected outcome;
o To provide methodology for quantifying uncertainties in simulation and/or acceptable tolerances based in comparison of simulations vs measurements;
o To propose acceptable deviations from validated models;
o Analyze deviations between measurement and simulation results according to the document, including the range of applicability for the validated simulation procedure.
4. Documentation and Reporting:
o Provide requirements for documenting virtual validation processes, including the methodologies adopted, conditions tested, results achieved, uncertainties considered, and acceptable tolerances to the exterior noise simulations.
o Establish a framework for reporting virtual validation outcomes to enhance transparency and stakeholder confidence in the simulation results related to exterior noise emissions.
5. Limitations:
This document does not cover Internal noise emissions within rolling stock
This document does not include all the instructions to characterize the noise emission of the other infrastructure related sources (like bridges, crossings, switches, impact noise, curving noise, etc.)
The document does not define tools to be used for acoustic simulation
