This document specifies a manual reference method for the determination of the mass concentration of mercury in exhaust gases from stationary source emissions. This document was revalidated in 2025 [X] using potassium permanganate as absorption solution for the determination of the mass concentration of total mercury in exhaust gases from the incineration plants (biomass, waste, sewage, sludge) and cement plants for the concentration range of total mercury from 0,0003 mg/m3 to 0,5 mg/m3 (0,3 μg/m3 to 500 μg/m3)1).
The method is considered to be applicable for exhaust gases from other sources. However, caution should be exercised when acid gas and/or unburned species concentrations are high. This document is also applied for calibration of mercury CEMS according to EN 14181 and EN 14884.
