1.1
This European Standard specifies the constructional requirements for portable and fixed vacuum cleaners and dust extractors, constructed to Group II G, providing an equipment protection level of Ga, Gb or Gc and to Group II D, providing an equipment protection level of Da, Db or Dc, intended for the recovery of combustible dusts and flammable liquids in potentially explosive atmospheres.
1.2
This European Standard does not apply to Group I vacuum cleaners and dust extractors for mining.
NOTE 1 Requirements for Group I vacuum cleaners and dust extractors are given in EN 1710.
NOTE 2 The requirements for electrical parts are covered by references to electrical equipment standards.
1.3
This standard does not apply to machines designed for picking up liquids with a flash point below 55 °C
1.4
This European Standard specifies requirements for design, construction, testing and marking of complete vacuum cleaner and dust extractor units intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres in air containing gas, vapor, mist and/or dusts. Such atmospheres may exist inside, outside, or inside and outside of the vacuum cleaner or dust extractor.
1.5
This European Standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to vacuum cleaners and dust extractors, when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer (see Clause 4)
NOTE 1 This European Standard may also be helpful for the design, construction, testing and marking of vacuum cleaners and dust extractors intended for use in non-potentially explosive atmospheres. In this case, the ignition risk assessment, ignition protection provided, additional testing (if necessary), manufacturer’s marking, technical documentation and instructions to the user, should clearly demonstrate and indicate the equipment’s suitability for the conditions the vacuum cleaner or dust extractor may encounter.
NOTE 2 Where undated references are used in the body of the standard the latest edition applies
