Sludges are subject to chemical, physical and biological changes as soon as they are collected. Guidance exists on the type of sampling technique (ISO 5667-12 and ISO 5667-13) and handling, preservation and storage procedures (ISO 5667-15) to minimize any changes in composition of the sludge by retarding chemical and/or biological activity and by avoiding contamination. Nevertheless, transport of important sludge volumes constitute the main problem and interlaboratory analysis on sludge should be carried out through circulation of analysts, close to the place where samples are collected according to the "Modified Round Robin Tests" procedure (CEN/TC 308-N822).
The paper deals with methodologies for preparing synthetic sludges in repeatable and quantified conditions suitable for circulation of sludges for Round-Robin tests. A synthetic sludge must summarize the main parameters of a raw material : i.e to be a colloidal system including porosity, compressibility, and rheologic properties.
