Recent advances in Information Technology and Manufacturing have given rise to new trends which mean that some of the traditional assumptions in standardisation work need to be reviewed. The majority of standards in the ergonomics field primarily emphasised safety aspects of the working environment (eg. preventing machines injuring human beings). Concern over the impact of computer-based manufacturing equipment on users in the working environment has led to several new human-centred assumptions - such as the usability of the spectrum of new technologies from the human point of view.
