This European Standard provides a framework for assessing the social performance of buildings throughout their entire lifecycle, in
accordance with EN 15643, and covers the following stages:
• Module A: Product stage (raw material extraction, manufacturing, transport);
• Module B: Use stage (occupation, maintenance, repair);
• Module C: End-of-life stage (demolition, waste processing);
• Module D: Benefits and loads beyond the system boundary (reuse, recycling, energy recovery).
The standard specifies:
• Methods and requirements for evaluating social sustainability, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and recognized schemes (e.g., FSC, BREEAM);
• Indicators for assessing key social performance categories as defined in EN 15643-3, including:
o Accessibility,
o Adaptability,
o Health and comfort,
o Impacts on the neighbourhood,
o Maintenance,
o Safety and security.
It applies to all types of buildings, both new and existing.
Exclusions:
• Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of organizations;
• Valuation methods, performance levels, or benchmarks (these may be defined in national regulations or certification
schemes).
